Résumé :

This is a short presentation of ideas on sustainable agriculture and Plans of Sustainable Development, as dealt with during the annual meeting of AFPF (Journées d'information 1997). Sustainable development, defined first in 1987, is a political strategy aiming at an economically viable development, both ecologically healthy and socially equitable, in space and in time. Sustainable agriculture is part of this policy, in accordance with other developments (more extensive forage systems, agro-environmental measures, land management, etc.). Its scope goes beyond the production systems, and encompasses produce quality, quality of life, the vitality of the rural fabric, etc. The Plans of Sustainable Development, an experimental operation put forward by the French Ministry of Agriculture, have supplied 600 farmers with the means to develop in this direction, and these constitute a network of references and competencies.
